Current Projects

The Destiny Project

Why are so-called role-playing computer games such sorry, emotionally uninvolving hack-and-slashes combined (or not) with tedious puzzle-solving? When the game world and the computer-managed characters are not believable the player can't help but withhold some of their emotional involvement. The Destiny Project is an evolving game engine with the goals of creating and managing any number of believable game settings, and of maintaining characters with which one can have a genuine conversation, hold a strategy-planning session, or just paint the town red.

The current focus within the project is the AI (artificial intelligence) of non-player (computer-maintained) characters. Work on this project has been slow and sporadic of late.

The Cyberhood Project

The aim of this project is to present one's favorite web sites as a navigable space. This allows 2-dimensional, or even 3-dimensional, organization of bookmarked sites (as contrasted with a one-dimensional hierarchy of headings or "folders"). Tootling around an internet neighborhood that one has built for one's self also has a significant "fun factor". The neighborhoods are built using VRML from various map files and material descriptions (adapted from the Destiny Project multi-layer map work). The curious can view an early demo neighborhood.
